I have lost more sunglasses than I could possibly count. On my head. On the dashboard. Somewhere in the sand between the sunscreen, the snacks and whatever else I was carrying for everyone.

For years, I did what most women do. Bought another pair, promised myself I would be more careful this time, and then promptly lost those too.

So I started making beaded chains to keep them close. Then, on a family trip to the Dominican Republic, I lost yet another very expensive pair and finally had the thought that probably should have occurred to me years earlier: why don't sunglasses actually have somewhere to attach a chain?

I went home and started drilling holes into cheap frames to prove the concept. They cracked. The lenses did not fare particularly well either. But the idea worked.

That became Rosa Rims.

Every frame is handcrafted in small batches in Italy's eyewear region using thick Mazzucchelli acetate, with our signature eyelet designed directly into the frame. It is not an attachment or an afterthought. It is built in from the beginning.

Our chains are made with semi-precious stones, strung by hand, and click onto the frames in seconds. Take them off and they become necklaces, which felt important because I have never been particularly interested in making something that only does one thing.

The five silhouettes are named after women with a very definite point of view: Edna, Muriel, Andie, Gigi and Rae. Grandmothers, mothers, friends and the kind of women you remember long after they leave a room.

They taught me that it is more about knowing exactly who you are, and not apologizing too much for it.

I grew up between the Caribbean Sea and Canadian lakes, and I am still happiest somewhere near water, usually with my kids, usually carrying too much stuff, and hopefully with my sunglasses still attached to me.

That is really the life Rosa Rims was designed for.

Because life is far too interesting to spend it looking for your sunglasses.
